Across 93 acres of land in Alpine, California, Mark and Bobbi Brink have built a sanctuary for lions, tigers, bears, and more. About 60 animal residents get to live in these huge enclosures, built to offer ample space for each animal to roam. Every so often, the animals also rotate enclosures, just to keep things interesting. It’s not exactly life in the wild, but it’s arguably as good as life gets for exotic animals in America. Bobbi began her work with big cats in Texas back in 1990, when she came across ads in the classifieds for tiger and leopard cubs for sale. The cats are cute when they’re little, but it takes only a matter of months for them to weigh hundreds of pounds. Not only that, it costs roughly $10,000 per animal each year for basic food, vaccines, and professional care. As most people don’t realize what they’re getting into with an exotic big cat, the animals are often forced to live in unhealthy, substandard conditions, or they are euthanized. More than half the states in America allow for the ownership of these dangerous animals. As long as backyard breeders remain unregulated, the lives of countless exotic animals will continue to hang in the balance.
