Anandini – A Mesmerizing Kathak Recital in Abu Dhabi Abu Dhabi recently witnessed a spellbinding evening of rhythm, grace, and devotion as Ruby Mathur presented her Kathak solo recital, Anandini – The Joy of Being! at the Indian Embassy Auditorium on February 15, 2025. The recital, conceptualized and choreographed under the esteemed guidance of Padmashree Guru Dr. Shovana Narayan, was a true celebration of art, spirituality, and personal evolution. A Celebration of Dance and Devotion Ruby Mathur's performance was a deeply personal and artistic journey, embodying the spirit of Anandini—the essence of joy, surrender, and self-realization. Every movement, every expression, and every beat of the tabla resonated with the audience, transporting them into a world of rhythmic storytelling. This recital was based on the concept of Navdurga, representing the nine forms of the Goddess, which beautifully align with the various stages of a woman's life—from innocence and strength to wisdom and transcendence. Through Kathak, Ruby depicted the evolution of womanhood, portraying the divine feminine energy that resides within every woman, reflecting both power and grace. The performance started with the Saraswati Vandana, a prayer for wisdom and creativity, moving into the Navdurga Shlok, paying homage to the Goddess in her various forms. The technical aspects of the performance included Jhaptal, Shringaar, Thumri, and Tarana Charukeshi, each showcasing different rhythms and emotions in Kathak, reflecting both the artist's technique and spiritual depth. A Journey of Dedication Across Borders Ruby had been preparing for this recital for the past few months as an online student of Guru Dr. Shovana Narayan, bridging the geographical distance between Abu Dhabi, where Ruby resides, and Delhi, where her guru is based. Despite the challenges of virtual learning, Ruby dedicated herself wholeheartedly to mastering each piece, refining her movements, and perfecting the nuances of abhinaya (expressive storytelling). The success of Anandini is a testament to her perseverance, the power of technology in preserving traditional arts, and the unwavering guru-shishya bond that transcends physical distances. The recital was elevated by the presence of some of the finest accompanying artists, especially flown in from New Delhi, India: 🎵 Madho Prasad on vocal & harmonium 🎵 Mahaveer Gangani on padhant & pakhawaj 🎵 Shakeel Ahmed Khan on tabla 🎵 Tariq Rafi Khan on sitar Their soulful music provided the perfect foundation for Ruby’s intricate footwork, graceful movements, and powerful abhinaya, making it a truly immersive experience. An Overwhelming Response from the Audience The recital was held in an auditorium with a seating capacity of 250, but the overwhelming response from art lovers meant that the audience far exceeded this number. People stood at the back, eager to witness the magic unfolding on stage. The electrifying atmosphere, the thunderous applause after each piece, and the collective energy of the audience made the evening truly unforgettable. The performance concluded with a two-minute-long standing ovation, a testament to the impact Ruby’s dance had on everyone present. Among the distinguished guests in attendance were Dr. Etienne Berchtold, the Austrian Ambassador, and Mrs. Vandana Sudhir, wife of the Indian Ambassador, both of whom were deeply moved by the recital. Adding to the honor of the occasion was the presence of Guru Dr. Shovana Narayan herself, witnessing the magic of her disciple’s performance.
