This little video is part of a series of fictitious commercials I created many years ago (1973-ish) while working at AFKN Radio in Seoul, Korea. AFKN was a U.S. military station, and at the time, we didn’t really have traditional advertising—mostly public service announcements and information about events happening on and around the base. Wanting my show, "Kimchi Pudding", to sound more like a radio station back home in the USA, I began producing my own “commercials.” But instead of making them realistic, I deliberately made them completely absurd and over-the-top. My hope was that even though many listeners usually tuned out during commercial breaks, the soldiers serving in Korea might actually stay tuned in, share a laugh, and enjoy a brief moment of lighthearted escape. This particular piece was inspired in part by the wonderfully off-the-wall humor of the Firesign Theatre and represents just one of many I produced during that era. Over the years, I've received numerous requests from servicemen who were stationed in Korea during the early '70s asking if I still had copies of those old spoofy commercials. And, that’s what inspired me to begin preserving them—one by one—here in video form. Listening to them now, they certainly sound dated and more than a little corny… but they capture a spirit of creativity, camaraderie, and fun that meant a great deal back then. These recordings are tiny time capsules from a unique chapter in broadcasting history—and from a time when a silly, ridiculous “commercial” could bring a smile to someone far from home.
