Due to consumerism, money has become the primary motive for many. Hospitals & Doctors operate in the same society, so it is but natural that unethical practices have crept in. Here is an exposure of these practices in the video. Additionally, a write up is given on CT scans radiation risks. CT scans are also a risk factor due to ionizing radiation. As CT scan radiation has the potential to cause DNA damage leading to possible mutations, the exposure to tissue is measured in Millisievert(mSv) i.e. effective doses based on sensitivity of body tissue e.g. breast tissue or thyroid is highly sensitive to radiation but brain tissue not so much. The biggest question is how much can cause it & when it is caused. Low dose ionizing radiation has a whole spectrum with only 0.01 mSv radiation for a simple xray to 10-15 mSv for an angiogram i.e. 1500 lowest dose x rays in one go & 25 mSv for a PET scan. So how much is too much? Here foremost to understand is two factors A. Cells that divide quickly like breast or thyroid have more chances of a missed repair as well as all children are more susceptible B. Old people have very less risk of developing fatal cancer as solid cancers from radiation may take even 10 to 40 years to show up & by that time an old man is already dead except leukemia which may show up as early as 5 years. Linear non-threshold (LNT) model out of all models still remains most popular which says that probability of a fatal cancer increases with dose accumulation in life. Even a simple 10 mSv CT scan increases chances on age based estimates. Age and sex are crucial factors, so one chest CT may cause one fatal cancer in 1 out of 2000 in a male at 40 years but much more in a child & much less in a 60 year old, also to a young girl taking chest CT vis a vis an old man taking chest CT scan , the probabilities of increase in life time additive risk of fatal cancer are very different due to breast tissue involvement & may come down to 1 in a few hundred. One in a few hundred may appear nothing at all but for the unfortunate ‘one’, it would matter gravely. Added issues are iodine contrast can potentially lead to thyroid issues & more breakage of double strands which is risky. Even in oncological imaging, concerns have been raised to set up protocols specially for children. ALARA is an acronym used in radiation safety for “As Low As Reasonably Achievable.” The ALARA radiation safety principle is based on the minimization of radiation doses and limiting the release of radioactive materials into the environment by employing all “reasonable methods”.
