This training vlog is a combination of 2 leg workouts for me that encompasses a full week of lower body focused training on my current Conjugate style training program. As with most of my programming these workouts contain a mix of modalities and methods: pure strength work utilizing pins, bodybuilding style hypertrophy work for the quads and hamstrings, unilateral stability/mobility work, explosive power work for the legs, a few isolated movements for the hips, and some conditioning work to round everything out! As far as the specific exercises go there are a few new things here for me. For the strength portion of the workout this was the first time I had ever done SSB squats off of pins. It was a new challenge and it felt very mentally difficult to deload the bar onto the pins during the descent. But I managed to work up to a clean single with 375lbs with a decent little bit left in the tank there, so I'm happy about that! For the bodybuilding portion of the workout the heels elevated front squat is another movement I have started doing recently. The exercise takes inspiration from none other than the Quadfather himself, Tom Platz, and his crazy leg workouts. Platz was known for insane leg size. The Platz squat is generally done as a narrow stance back squat often with the heels elevated to keep the torso upright and increase the range of motion at the knee joint specifically. My take on this is to do it as a front squat! This helps to further increase that emphasis on the knee joint and just serves to make the exercise more brutal in general. Lastly, for the power building portion of the workout we have the behind the power jerk! Here we are taking inspiration from Olympic weightlifting in order to build power and explosiveness in the legs. The most common movement you'll see people performing to accomplish this is the power clean or hang power clean, and those movements are great for that purpose. But I wanted to try something new and I love throwing big weight overhead so I decided to start toying around with different jerk variations again. This one felt awkward from behind the neck and without splitting the legs, but I think if I keep at it I can get it over 300 pounds! My main goal with my current leg training is to build general leg strength and power, improve general conditioning levels, and stay sharp, agile, and explosive for pick up sports and life in general.
