Princess Margaret of Connaught, later known as Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden (Kronprinsessan Margareta), is one of my favourites among the Swedish Royals. She was born in the United Kingdom as the first born daughter of Queen Victoria's 7th Child, Prince Arthur. Within the family Margaret came to be known as "Daisy". In her early 20's, she and her little sister Princess Patricia (who was in her late teens then), was seen as the most beautiful princesses in Europe and King Edward VII wanted his neices to marry Kings or Crown Princes of Europe. On a trip to Egypt the family met Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden (later King Gustaf VI Adolf). Initially it was thought that there could be a match between Gustaf Adolf and Patricia, but instead Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Margaret fell in love and got engaged during the very same trip. After their marriage and honeymoon (which they had in Ireland), The couple traveled to Sweden, where the Swedish people gave Margaret a warm welcome. Immediately Margaret took lessons in Swedish and managed the language very well within 2 years. Upon her own request she also studied Swedish history among other things. The first years in Sweden, Margaret took her position very seriously and came off as rather stiff and withdrawn, but once people started to see her more relaxed side while doing what she loved, sports, people changed their opinions about her and she was very liked. She did all kinds of sports; tennis, golf, skiing, ice skating, and hockey (”bandy” in today's Swedish term). Not only did Margaret have a passion for sports ,but she also had a great passion for photography, painting and gardening. Together with Gustaf Adolf she had 5 children - Gustaf Adolf (1906), Sigvard (1907), Ingrid(1910), Bertil (1912) and Carl Johan(1916). She was very family oriented and loved spending as much time as possible with her children, Margaret did a whole bunch of charity work in Sweden, especially for women, and she looked positively upon democracy. Crown Princess Margaret of Sweden died on may 1st 1920 from an infection, which was a result of complication following an operation. Announcing her death the swedish prime minister said "Nu har solstrålen i Stockholm Slott slocknat" (meaning,: "Now the ray of sunshine in Stockholm Palace has gone out")
