Like many people my own age, I probably heard the iconic Star Trek main titles theme on the Star Trek: The Next Generation television first, and was then surprised to discover that it dates from 1979, when I saw the film for the first time. Goldsmith's score features his usual emotional depth and warmth, his familiarity with the story of the film and his technical mastery. Other interesting features include the use of novel instruments such as the Wind Machine and experimental Blaster Beam. Goldsmith also has the orchestra play in a lower register, and the resulting sound reminds me of a pipe organ. In addition to many naval and sci-fi motifs, the soundtrack includes touching themes for Ilia and Deckard, brooding moments of self-reflection for Admiral Kirk, and ritual droning for Mr. Spock. But by far the defining characteristic of this soundtrack are the otherworldly and ethereal textures created for the film's true star, V'Ger (or as the soundtrack renders it, Vejur). My aim through this intentionally abridged offering is to focus almost exclusively on V'Ger itself, and to a lesser extent the insane journey that Spock and Ilia went on during their encounter with this, one of the most extraordinary lifeforms ever discovered in the entire Star Trek Universe. I have sought to edit the track listing in a manner which creates a meditative, symphony of V'Ger. Any and all unrelated cues or passages have been removed to create one thematically unified program, about half an hour in length. V'Ger is the Paragon of the Alien and the Unknown, and Jerry Goldsmith truly has created a fitting accompaniment to it. Each passage has between one (1) to three (3) images to accompany it, so that there is at least something to look at while you listen. Each of these images are themselves collages of scenes from the film, combined in ways that are relevant to the music being heard. Enjoy. And do live long and prosper.
