If this movie exists for no other reason, it's to shine a spotlight on Ethan Hawke, who absolutely dissolves into a real life person named Lorenz Hart. I didn't know it before this movie, so in case you don't either, Lorenz Hart was a famous lyricist from way back in the day when musicals were a big thing in the cinema. This movie is not interesting, and I didn't really learn anything of historical importance, but watching Ethan Hawke play this short drunk man who feels he's past his prime is a sight to behold. The first 20 minutes of this movie is just him sitting in a bar, rambling on about stuff in a never-ending monologue, but he was just so fun to watch. And really, the rest of the movie isn't much different from that. During the opening of Oklahoma!, Ethan Hawke is out in the bar or the lobby just waiting for the show to be over, and he runs into other famous people who have yet to make their own indelible marks on the world, and Lorenz Hart disperses some advice as someone who's way past his heyday. This movie is - whatever - but the only reason to see it is for Ethan Hawke's performance. He's just so committed to this persona, he's like one of those drunk guys at the party who has to be the center of attention, and despite that, you just can't take your eyes off him, waiting to see what he'll say next. But most of what he says is just nonsense, so you don't remember much of it. As a movie, it's highly forgettable, as it's just a bunch of pontificating, so Blue Moon definitely belongs on the bottom of your watchlist, but at least look up clips of Ethan Hawke in this movie, and you'll see what I'm talking about. Like, I want to see Ethan Hawke play this type of character in a much better movie.
