Nickle and Dimed to Death Written By: Rickey Phipps (Verse 1) Sixteen years and a hand-me-down .22 One day past the season, just something to do. The warden didn't care about the Christmas tree, Or the man who died in 2 thousand and 3. He took the only thing that boy had left of his dad, Wrote a fine for every penny the youngster had. Now he’s picking up trash on the side of the interstate, While the law calls it "teaching him a lesson" at an early age. (Verse 2) Down at the Piggly Wiggly, a mother stands crying, Holding a mangy hound, she’s tired of the lying. She can’t fill the bowl and the high chairs too, So she offers him up to a stranger in the queue. But the handcuffs clicked before she could explain, "Animal cruelty," they said, ignoring her pain. No respect for the hunger, no heart for the mother, Just another case file to stack on another. (Chorus) Where does it stop? Who’s holding the line? They’re trading our lives for a nickel and a dime, The legal boys are laughing, patting backs in the hall, While the scales are tipped over against the wall. They’ll fine a good man ‘til he’s got nothing left, Then call it 'Justice' while they commit the theft. (Verse 3) A semi-truck sits with his hazard lights blinking, A distracted sedan hit him without even thinking. But the car had no coverage, and the driver had friends, So the trucker’s record is where the story ends. Then you got the cook with the blue-tinted glass, Caught with a baggie and a snake in the grass. He gets a "don't do it again" and a year on the street, While the honest man’s struggling just to stay on his feet. (Verse 4) A kid in the hallway, a post on Facebook, The SWAT team is coming for a second look. They dragged him from homeroom in front of the class, For a joke and a comment they wouldn't let pass. But the drunk in the dually who ran the red light? The Sheriff "lost" the blood-work in the middle of the night. Case dismissed, let him back on the road, While the boy in the cell feels the weight of the load. (Outro) Yeah, the guilty go dancing, the lawyers get paid, And the working man’s buried in the mess they’ve made. Broken down... System’s gone cold... Just another story that’ll never be told.
