From the Great Depression to WWII, Kennecott had no shortage of challenges in its fourth decade. When the economy crashed in 1929, so did the demand for copper. But despite the collapse, the Utah Copper Company avoided layoffs and kept their employees fed and working, helping the district push through the Great Depression. Now as the world-leading copper producer, Kennecott was tested again with the war on the horizon. The men left for war, and the women took over the mining. In all, the mines provided a third of the copper used by the Allied forces. Achieving a new production record of 19 million tons as our soldiers pushed on to victory. This was a decade defined by heroes.
