In this documentary, Mark Fiecas, PhD, recounts his path to becoming an Associate Professor and Associate Division Head of the Division of Biostatistics & Health Data Science. Born in the Philippines and later migrating to the US, he reflects on adapting to transitions, feeling isolated from peers, and how these shaped his worldview. Mark describes mathematics as an early coping strategy and creative outlet that evolved into a biostatistics career intersecting neuroscience. He views biostatistics as storytelling; using health and brain data to reveal lived experiences, disparities, and mechanisms, and stressing how embracing his identities informs his mentorship, collaboration across science fields, and encouragement for others feeling out of place to pursue scientific curiosity. By blending lived experience with scientific curiosity, this film highlights the non-linear realities of education and career development. Mark’s story challenges traditional narratives of who belongs in science and emphasizes that persistence, adaptability, and purpose can open doors to neuroscience and research careers. This documentary is intended to inspire young and non-traditional students, particularly those from underrepresented or uncertain academic backgrounds, to see themselves in neuroscience and to believe that their experiences can be a strength, not a barrier.
