Born in 1927 in the Tennessee Mountains, Homer Ledford was raised in the rich culture of the Appalachian region. Music and its instruments sparked Ledford's curiosity from an early age and at eighteen, he was offered a scholarship from the John Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. Later, his desire to study industrial arts landed him at Berea College, where he fell in love with his soon-to-be wife, Colista Spradlin. However, Ledford's love for teaching and need for credentials took him just a few miles up the road to Eastern Kentucky University, where he graduated with his B.S. degree in 1954. Though he gave up teaching in 1963, Ledford never stopped cultivating and sharing his musical passion. As an incredibly talented musician and uniquely skilled inventor, Ledford played 13 instruments and created over 6000 instruments in his lifetime. Though he primarily crafted dulcimers, Ledford ingeniously combined various instruments to make new pieces, such as the Dulcijo (a combination of the dulcimer and banjo) and the Dulcitar (a combination of the dulcimer and guitar). Not only did he make these artful innovations, but he was happy to show and play his creations. He proudly formed the Cabin Creek Band in 1976 and led it until his death in 2006. The following works are just a few examples of his skill and creativity, his passion, his legacy. #Art #Music #Story #Inspiration
