This video approaches the acropora zone at Rock Key from the north side, the shallow rubble area behind the reef. A white pox type coral disease outbreak affecting many coral colonies is observed. Coral diseases of this type are impossible to positively identify while on the reef. Frequent monitoring of a site can observe the beginning of an outbreak and the speed at which it devours the living tissue which helps in identifying the infection. A few of the coral colonies near the beginning appear to be bleaching as well, they are almost totally white with a gradual gradient from living coral to dead coral. Most coral diseases have a definitive line between living and dead areas. The importance of this video recording is the documentation of the amount of living Acropora palmata observed. By 2025 this species has vanished from this reef.
