Twittermonologe ("Lyrics" by Donald J. Trump), Music by Manuel Rösler Laura Pohl, Soprano / Ashley Hribar, Piano LIve recording from June 25th, 2017 I find it horrifying that Donald Trump is back in power – supported by an entire country, by media, and major corporations that seem to submit to him willingly. It painfully reminds me of Germany in the 1930s, as if we’ve learned nothing from history. Eight years ago, in 2016, I began grappling artistically with the beginnings of this tragedy. The Twitter Monologues were premiered on June 25, 2017, in Minden as part of the Times of Change series. Soprano Laura Pohl and pianist Ashley Hribar performed the works. These compositions arose from my confrontation with the Trump administration’s early days – already marked by fascist and dystopian tendencies with global consequences. The idea came when Laura Pohl asked me for texts that were banal and trivial. I immediately thought of Donald Trump’s tweets, which dominated headlines at the time. These texts revealed a dangerous mix of naivety, narcissism, and destructive will to power – like a 5-year-old in a 71-year-old’s body. Inspired by Hans Eisler’s 1920s settings of newspaper ads, I turned the tweets into short operatic scenes. One example was a tweet targeting a TV host, written by Trump in 22 minutes – spelling errors included. Musically, I parodied American news themes and used clichés to highlight the absurd contrast between Trump’s banal tweets and harsh political realities. The texts ended just before Trump’s inauguration. The last tweet I set dreamed of a grand celebration and empty closets in Washington. In hindsight, only destruction remained – politically, socially, and culturally. For me, the performance was more than a concert. It was an attempt to explore the "mind of the monster": Is there still a person behind the noise? Or is this complete dehumanization by power? On the night after the premiere, I fell gravely ill and nearly died. I believe that grappling with the depths of this regime affected me more than I realized. Today, I see the project as a musical question to us all: What does power do to people? And how do we deal with the noise that drowns out the world? --- #DonaldTrump #Trump2024 #PoliticalMusic #TwitterMonologues #Fascism #Dystopia #ContemporaryMusic #ArtAsResistance #OperaticScenes #HistoryRepeats
