The church of Saints Philip and James, or church of the Silk Guild, is a place of worship in Naples and is located in via San Biagio dei Librai, near the churches of San Biagio Maggiore and Santa Luciella. The building was commissioned from 1591 by the Silk Guild, which was made up of merchants, weavers and dyers. The Corporation, through the support of the King of Naples, Alfonso of Aragon, achieved considerable power. Inside there was a court with both civil and criminal functions on those who worked silk. The first church of the Silk Guild, already dedicated to Saints Philip and James, stood near Piazza Mercato and was linked to a conservatory. The latter had been born as early as 1582 and housed the daughters of poor, sick or deceased artisans who belonged to the Corporation. After the increase in the number of girls, it was necessary to give them a more dignified accommodation, so they were transferred to the place where the palace of Prince Acquaviva of Caserta (later Caetani di Sermoneta) stood. Currently the building preserves important traces of Baroque architecture in the city. In fact, in 1758 it was the subject of a renovation by the architect Gennaro Papa. The façade slightly recessed with respect to the lower decumanus of San Biagio dei Librai is characterized by two orders: in the lower one, inside niches, it is possible to admire the sculptures of Saints Philip and James, works by Giuseppe Sanmartino; in the upper one, inside the niches, the statues of Religion and Faith, the work of Giuseppe Picano, a pupil of Sanmartino. The interior follows the dictates of the Counter-Reformation, presenting itself as a single nave without a transept and with an apse space covered by a dome. Important artists have contributed to the pictorial decorations in the church, including Alessio d'Elia, for the choir, Jacopo Cestaro, for the nave, where in the central part he depicts the Assumption of the Virgin. In addition, in the church, it is possible to admire the beautiful majolica terracotta floor by Donato Massa in 1738. The floor covers the entire nave bearing the coat of arms of the Silk Guild in the center. On the sides of the entrance there are two holy water fonts, a very rare example of Neapolitan rococo, the work of the artist Giacomo Massotti, also author of the balustrade. The church also has important wooden sculptures preserved inside the side chapels. In the sacristy and in the deposits of the church there are other works of inestimable value, including an eighteenth-century wooden altar characterized by a beautiful perspective and an episcopal throne carved and decorated with the symbols of the Silk Art.
