This PSP detour in East Perth is pretty good - but it's let down by a failure to run proper checks

This is a long video, but I wanted to have a really thorough look at how this detour was setup. This could almost be used as an example for teaching traffic controllers how to setup a cyclist detour properly. After riding through the Main Roads horror shows at the Fremantle Traffic Bridge and north of Warwick train station, it was a nice surprise to find a detour that was actually pretty good. The signs are large and bright and easy to spot and read They're generally well positioned There's plenty of signage The signage is cyclist specific The detour is pretty clear and relatively easy to follow However, it's let down by three aspects: There's no maps anywhere (maps can make up for signage issues) There was a missing detour sign, meaning I missed a road crossing Clearly, the signage hadn't been inspected properly by someone riding the route - because if they had ridden the route, that defect would have been detected. The lesson to be learned from this is that you can have a really good traffic management plan and ample signage and you can have a crew that does a good job of making the signage visible - but if you don't check the work, errors go undetected. A ride through should be mandatory every time signage is put out or changed. That's an issue for the Main Roads policy people and possibly Austroads.
