Prokhorovka is often called the largest tank battle in history — but that title is misleading. If we look beyond single engagements and focus on scale, the Battle of Brody–Dubno–Lutsk in June 1941 likely involved far more armor. In the opening days of Operation Barbarossa, six Soviet mechanised corps threw roughly 3,500 tanks — including early T-34s and KV-1s — against around 750 German tanks from Ewald von Kleist’s 1st Panzer Army. Despite their numerical advantage, Soviet forces suffered devastating losses due to poor coordination, fuel shortages, and German air superiority. The Germans, though outnumbered, used superior command and logistics to outmanoeuvre and destroy much of the Soviet armored force. So why is Prokhorovka remembered — and Brody forgotten? Because legend often matters more than numbers.
