History and Background Information: Take a deep breath because the air is getting thin. The Ötztal Glacier Road ist the highest paved open for public in Europe. The highest point is at the southern end of the Rosi Mittermaier Tunnel (highest road tunnel in Europe) at an altitude of 2830m. With that altitude it is higher than the Col de la Bonette (2715 m)/Cime de la Bonnette (2802 m) and higher than the legendary Passo Stelvio/Stilfser Joch. The route has two dead ends. One on the southside of the Glacier (2830m) and one on the northern side (2798m). The emblem in the intro at the top right is a scan of the sticker I got at the toll station. But the height takes it´s tribute. At the top of the route you could definitly feel and hear that the car was under a lot of strain to climb the 1400m from Sölden. Especially the gearbox, the cooling system and the engine oil were extremly stressed. The average(!) gradient of this road is 11%. So you must definitly consider if it´s worth going up that road. Especially with old cars. The toll of the road is also quite expensive: 19€ and it´s not even a pass road like the close by Timmelsjoch wich is also cheaper. In my opinion the view at the top is not as beatiful as it seems in the video and on pics on instagram and Facebook. The area around the glacier is just a big pile of gravel and so everything looks like a construction sight. But the wider view is very scenic.
