Each month, Bob’s Watches receives hundreds of used luxury watches. We never know exactly what will be in the box, which makes opening each package a thrill in itself. With our Watch in the Box video series, we take you along with us as we open a brand new box. Today’s Watch in the Box comes to us from Florham Park, New Jersey and packs a surprise with two excellent examples of the steel and white gold Rolex Datejust. The watches are presented in a genuine Rolex box and come with papers for an older Ref 16014 and the modern Ref 116234. Both of these watches feature a stainless steel case and bracelet and a white gold fluted bezel. The main difference between the two is the movement inside the case and the use of materials, such as the luminous plots and protective crystal over the dial. The 16014 is a product of the 1980s and features an older-style case with holes present and a Jubilee bracelet with hollow five-piece links. A Caliber 3035 movement powers the Datejust 16014 and offers a Quickset function for the date mechanism and self-winding. This example is in overall good shape for its age with a desirable patina on the dial. The luminous plots in the hands and above each hour marker have faded over time to a warm hue, which is a widely sought-after characteristic among vintage Rolex collectors. The ref. 16014 also features an acrylic crystal over the dial and appears smaller on the wrist than the ref. 116234, despite offering the same 36mm case diameter. It’s clear that the former owner of these watches prefers the versatility of a white metal wristwatch. The next example in this box is the newer stainless steel and 18 karat white gold ref. 116234, referred to by Rolex as the “White Rolesor” Datejust. It features a contemporary no-holes case with polished and thicker lugs, and also comes fitted on a Jubilee bracelet; however, this version is of a newer style, with solid links and a completely redesigned hidden Crownclasp. Due to its thicker lugs and solid bracelet, the reference 116234 feels a bit more substantial on the wrist than the reference. 16014. The silver dial offers a contemporary twist on the classic Datejust by displaying the time with baton hour markers and hands filled with long-lasting lume. The dial features a nice sunburst finish and sits beneath a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, giving it an overall more modern aesthetic when compared to the ref. 16014. The Datejust 116234 was introduced to the market in the mid-2000s and runs on Rolex’s trusty Caliber 3135 movement, a significant upgrade from the previously-mentioned ref. 16014. The Caliber 3135 offers a slightly longer power reserve of up to 50 hours as well as a frequency of 28,800 bph, Quickset date function, and chronometer certification. While the 3035 and 3135 movements are similar, the Caliber 3135 is more refined and has since become a staple of many newer Rolex watches. See a pre-owned luxury watch you like?
