This motorcycle restoration video was a fun little project that kept me busy for a couple of months in the Hard Luck Garage. The bike was a 1976 Honda CR125 Elsinore that featured many rare vintage performance parts from the Flying Machine Factory (FMF), Fox Racing shocks, Pro-Fab swingarms, and Mikuni carburetors. As usual for me, the bike started out in pieces and parts and was in pretty rough shape. The bike lived a hard life and required extensive repairs. The engine was rebuilt with new bearings and seals and a fresh bore. I also replaced a bent shift shaft and a damaged clutch basket. The frame had a couple of cracks and the normal drooping foot pegs that had to be weld repaired until they were level again. Probably the nicest parts on the bike were the suspension components. The front forks have the FMF weld-on coolers and I replaced the pitted chrome fork tubes with nicer items found on Ebay. The last touch to the front end was a set of yellow FMF foam fork protectors. The rear suspension consisted of slightly longer travel air-adjustable Fox Shox. The cool shocks bolted to a strong chromoly steel Pro Fab swingarm which containted quality bronze swingarm bushings to keep the bike handling tight and straight on the track. Engine improvements featured several more FMF products. The cylinder was ported and finished off with a trick FMF porcupine cylinder head. The down pipe FMF exhaust with the rather unusual silencer section appeared to be a rare single year FMF item. The pipe was originally painted red by the FMF company and I refrained from painting it to a more modest black with this restoration. The ported motor was also allowed to inhale more gas from a larger Mikuni VM round slide carburetor. Finally, the carb received its fuel from a light weight FMF RC Replica fiberglass gas tank. Originally, the tank leaked like a spaghetti strainer and I had to do several fiberglass repairs before I got it to stop leaking fuel. The final touches on the bike was a beautiful Pro Tec spring-loaded chain guide. A rebuilt seat with new foam and cover. NOS high and wide DG handlebars and a set of Full Circle vintage racing rims. Finally, I added numerous period correct vintage decals from Fast Guy Stuff .com.
