Buster Odeholm, a leading figure in contemporary extreme metal production and mastermind behind Humanity’s Last Breath and Vildhjarta, showcases his innovative approach to mixing 'In Solitude'. Known for his signature tones and unconventional workflows, Odeholm’s mix embodies the dense, heavy, and hyper-processed aesthetics of modern deathcore. Key elements of Odeholm’s mix include: • Drums: Acoustic kick dynamics were preserved while blended with one-shot samples for consistent low-end. Snare and toms combined natural recordings with heavily processed samples. Drum buss processing featured parallel channels emphasizing attack, sustain, and distorted midrange tones, with automation enhancing dynamics and impact. • Bass: Crafted entirely from the DI signal and routed through three distinct busses (sub-bass, grit, and stereo). Low-end distortion, multiband compression, and tone-matching ensured integration with guitars while maximizing width and weight. • Guitars: Three tracks (left, right, and centre) were processed with amplifier simulations, EQ, multiband compression, and tape saturation. Odeholm used a boosting pedal at low intensity to balance tightness and low-end weight. Stereo widening and tone-matching finalized the guitar tone. • Vocals: Treated with EQ, compression, and multiband processing for tonal balance. Reverb and delay were band-pass-filtered to limit occupied space, while a dynamic vocal rider ensured clarity in the dense mix. • Orchestration: Frequencies were attenuated to prioritize the low-end hierarchy of kick, bass, and guitars. • Mastering: Separate busses for vocals and instruments were processed individually, with heavy compression, distortion, and tape saturation applied to the instrumental buss. Final tone-matching EQ and limiting ensured loudness and cohesion while retaining clarity and impact. 🎵 Access the multitracks, stems, and audio exports for free: https://huddersfield.box.com/s/8gren2...
