How did the suburbs form? After World War II, many young families in the United States moved to new houses in the suburbs, chasing the “American Dream.” But who chose to move there? Who had to stay in the city? Why? This video, a portion of a Johnson County Museum exhibit tour, explores the forces that shaped the urban and suburban spaces not just of Kansas City and Johnson County, but around the nation. This history is complex and long-lasting, and as the largest suburban area in the Kansas City Metro, the Johnson County Museum hopes not only to inform visitors of often over-looked narratives, but to start dialogues within the community about what a future in the suburb can look like.
