SECRET LOVE, Doris Day, (Columbia #40108) 1953 Flipside: THE DEADWOOD STAGE (WHIP-CRACK-AWAY) – Here is one of the truly classic pop ballads from my music collection. Doris Day was born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff on April 3, 1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She passed on May 13, 2019 (age 97). What a career. She is sadly missed! Doris Day has recorded so many great songs. She had 14 songs charted nationally from 1955 to 1962 on Billboard. Her biggest then and considered her signature song was “WHATEVER WILL BE, WILL BE” it charted in August 1956 for 27 weeks and reached #2. It stayed #2 for 3 weeks and was a major hit song! “WHATEVER WILL BE, WILL BE” was written by Jay Livingston and Ray Lewis and published in 1956. Doris Day introduced the song in the 1956 motion picture “The Man Who Knew Too Much” which starred Doris Day and Jimmy Stewart. The movie was produced by Alfred Hitchcock. “WHATEVER WILL BE, WILL BE” won the 1956 Academy Award for best original song! Doris has appeared in so many movies it would be impossible for me to include all her movie and song credits. “SECRET LOVE” is a song composed by Sammy Fain (music) and Paul Francis Webster (lyrics) for Calamity Jane, a 1953 musical film in which it was introduced by Doris Day in the title role. Ranked as a number 1 hit for Day on both the Billboard and Cash Box. I’m uploading “SECRET LOVE” and dedicating it to one of our loyal subscribers, John Rynbeek. He is a dedicated doowop/pop music lover who really knows his music. John, like me, loves Doris Day. Again, John thanks so much for all of your support! “SECRET LOVE” has been recorded by many artists; Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Gogi Grant, Tommy Edwards, Connie Francis, Count Basie, Billy Eckstein, Dinah Washingtion, The Moonglows, The Orioles, The Ink Spots, Frankie Avalon and The Connotations (up-tempo acappella version) just to name a few! Enjoy this truly great ballad “SECRET LOVE” sung so effortlessly by the late “GREAT” Doris Day. If “Angels” could sing, they would sound just like Doris Day.
