First, I want to thank everyone for 600 subscribers! I appreciate the support you all have shown to the channel and I do plan on making more videos again. In this video, we check out the basement levels located at both Southdale and Rosedale Center. Southdale Center originally opened in 1956 and was one of the first climate controlled indoor shopping malls, with some arguing it as the first. The basement level of the mall was originally used as a post office, mall offices, bathrooms and a small zoo. In the early 1990’s it was converted from mixed use into mostly a large Marshall’s store. The store closed around 2023 as far as I can tell and I was not aware of this so I missed the final day of operation. The original escalators and glass elevator going down to the store were removed and the elevator was replaced by Schumacher (using very cheap parts which allow the basement to be accessed easily). To my knowledge, no other YouTubers or Urban Explorers have been down here with only minor vandalism. The store itself is still mostly there, with most of the checkout lanes, shelves and glass displays still remaining all of the merchandise and much of the flooring has been removed. I believe this store suffered a flood at some point, likely originating from the bathrooms that destroyed the flooring and that’s why it was removed, along with the bathroom walls being gone. Still awesome to see most of the store still here though. Second, we checked out the basement at Rosedale Center. Rosedale Center is from the late 1960’s and the majority of the basement here is Macy’s, however, going to level B on the main elevator outside Macy’s will bring you into a secondary service basement. There isn’t a whole lot down here, but it is a cool area of the mall 99% of shoppers will never see. I do not understand the logic in digging it out when storage rooms on the surface or even a 3rd floor would have been more economical but this area could have had another purpose originally. As always, be careful when exploring these places and I do not condone any vandalism or other criminal activity within abandoned buildings.
