Walking tour of Deer Island Boston Harbor Massachusetts. In this outdoor walking tour video we start at the parking lot and walk out to the south end of Deer Island. Great views of Boston, boats, and ducks! You may know deer island for the egg shaped containers that are part of the Deer Island treatment plant that resides there. The walkway is paved the entire length. There is a 3 mile or so walking loop around the island. Deer Island is a 185-acre peninsula located in Boston Harbor, Massachusetts. The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway and is home to a number of important facilities, including the Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, which is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the United States. The plant processes the sewage from more than 40 communities in the Boston metropolitan area, and uses state-of-the-art technology to treat the wastewater before it is released into the harbor. In addition to the treatment plant, Deer Island is also home to a number of parks and recreational facilities, making it a popular destination for visitors to the area. Despite its industrial and functional nature, Deer Island is also home to a number of natural habitats and is an important stopover point for migratory birds. Visitors can explore the island's scenic walking trails and enjoy views of the harbor and the Boston skyline. The island also boasts a number of historic sites, including the Deer Island Prison, which operated as a correctional facility from 1888 until 1991.
