Psychological injuries are among the most costly and complex workplace challenges, with claims rising from 6% in 2014-2015 to 9% in 2020-2022. The largest share relating to anxiety/stress disorders (36%) and reactions to stressors (34%). These injuries result in 30.7 weeks of work lost per serious injury claim, compared to just 6.2 weeks for physical injuries, highlighting the urgent need for effective management strategies. This presentation explores work-oriented treatment as a best-practice approach to mental health management. Drawing on evidence-based research, it will demonstrate how focusing on functional recovery and RTW strategies improves outcomes for employees and organisations. Key topics include: Shifting from purely psychological treatment to work-oriented approaches that integrate functional goals, such as setting small, achievable tasks like daily walking or mindfulness practice Using work-oriented treatment to support recovery and engagement Creating a supportive workplace culture through early intervention, meaningful RTW plans, and cooperation among leaders.
