I am convinced that living surrounded by the sea has to influence your way of creating, relating to the world, sunrise and seeing your surroundings. That eternal cadence of the waves. That lot of blues. The certainty of having to sail or fly to get out of there. For a lifetime, the Margariteños did not even consider leaving their island. It was a complication and it wasn't necessary if they had everything here, until the ferries appeared and it became natural. Well, I went to look for sea creators. People whose imagination flourishes on this Caribbean island. Artists that few people know or visit, because what tourists are looking for is sun and beach. Wind and salt. Rumba and tanning. Eat tasty and make friends. This is how we arrived at the Mata Redonda hamlet where Yliana Millán, a gastronomic creator, lives. After a lifetime collecting sea urchins in her Mata de Palo lagoon, after seeing her mother, her grandmother and all the women of that town, she decided to create dishes with this exotic and elusive marine delicacy. She won prizes every contest she participated in and now has her own small restaurant in her house where she prepares native succulents. Further away, in San Francisco de Macanao, we went to look for the Marcano brothers in their workshop under the cují bushes and next to the cacti. There they learned with their father to make wooden furniture that resists sun, water, wind and salt. Beauty is in simplicity. Chairs, benches and stick tables that sometimes have legs that look like deer legs because they are made of guatacare and open to make two legs. Pablo Millán lives right there, a plastic artist who was inspired by nature throughout his life. In the mountain where he grew up despite the opposition of his mother, who finally accepted him to be a painter. Right now he is making wooden picks. Some fish with large teeth that do not allow themselves to be caught because they want to remain free in the Caribbean Sea. He has won a lot of awards, but he is still there, in his little house with many colors. In Paraguachí I met Freddy Albornoz, a man from Meride who came to this island and although he had no memory of fish on his palate, he understood that he had to make cuisine with identity. He then smoked the fish until they became hams that reminded him of the flavors of his childhood and achieved authentic succulents. To bid farewell to the sea creators we passed by the workshop of Juan José Bermúdez, a potter of barely 25 years old convinced of maintaining the tradition of his town of El Cercado, a hamlet where extraordinary clay is produced and where generations of generations have lived and They have raised their families making cups, plates, aripos and clay pots, by hand or on a wheel, dried on firewood or in ovens. Juan José assures that if he is born again he will be a potter again because that is what he was born for.
