(11 Aug 2000) Natural Sound Two groups of demonstrators took to the streets of Jakarta around the meeting of the People's Consultative Assembly (M-P-R) Thursday. A rally at the legislature's gates brought together groups critical of the president and vice president for selling out reform in Indonesia. The other protestors headed to the residence of former President Suharto demanding that he be held accountable for robbing the nation of (m) millions of dollars. As the M-P-R demonstrators voiced their frustration after getting rid of former President Suharto, their reform movement was being ignored by the politicians they elevated to power. The group was mostly made up of students from Jakarta universities. The summer holidays have kept many student activists outside of the capital and unavailable to attend rallies. Despite lower attendance the demonstrators hope their message will get across to President Abdurrahman Wahid and Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri. An alliance between Megawati and the former ruling Golkar party has caused Wahid to cede some power to the vice president. Joining a coalition with Golkar bothers many Megawati supporters. But there are few alternative opposition leaders who aren't tainted with some kind of alliance with established parties. Golkar is synonymous with former President Suharto, who was forced from power two years ago after leading the nation for over 30 years. It is widely believed that he and his family made themselves rich during his tenure. Hundreds of (m) millions of dollars are rumoured to be hidden in various places for Suharto and his six children. Protestors were never allowed this close to his residence while he was in office. But President Wahid indicated earlier this year that Suharto may feel compelled to return some of the money he is alleged to have amassed if he feels he needs protection from demonstrators.
