THE POWER OF THE GARRATTS

2009 will mark the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the ground-breaking Beyer-Garratt design, and Power of the Garratts celebrates the power and magnificence of these locomotives. Introduced from 1909, the Beyer-Garratt articulated design was patented by H. W. Garratt, but it was to be Beyer-Peacock who would develop the design into the first articulated locomotive, the 0-4-0+0-4-0T K1. The design went on to serve in Tasmania, Australia and South Africa, and we investigate the designs that work today in the UK. We examine the original Garratt, K1, as well as the NG/G16 designs that are now enjoying a new lease of life on the revitalised Welsh Highland Railway.
