We have had some amazing displays of the mirrie dancers in Shetland this month. I managed to take some footage of the aurora in real-time last Thursday night. A bright display that showed at times in shades of red to the naked eye. It could be viewed in all directions and sat overhead as if we were under a dome of aurora. Looking up into the corona it was fast moving and it was light enough to walk around with no need for a torch. The birds in the mires were making much noise, perhaps with the light in the sky they thought it was the dawn coming up or they were aware of the aurora moving overhead. I took some photos but they didn’t really do justice to the coverage of the aurora across the whole sky and extent of the display. I ended up just lying back in the grass and taking it all in. It was active like this for a couple of hours. In Shetland we lie at 60°N. The soundtrack is two traditional Shetland tunes we recorded with Fiddlers’ Bid. ‘Sigurd o’ Gord’s Spring’, a trowie tune from Sandness and ‘Skeklers’✨ from our album ‘All Dressed in Yellow’. Filmed on Canon r6 and EF24mm f1.4 lens Taken in Fladdabister, Shetland, 23 March 2023
