Maiden Castle in the North Riding of Yorkshire is impressive and unique. Deep ditches carved into the side of High Harker Hill with an unusual walled causeway to the shattered remains of a gate, make for an unusual “hillfort”. If that’s what it is…. On a very hot day at the start of May, we set off to investigate this little known scheduled ancient monument. After a short hike up onto the moor above Grinton, there it is. A huge Bronze Age bowl barrow marking the start of the causeway. There’s only ever been one small excavation here and multiple theories abound as to what it is. Does it go back to the Neolithic or Bronze Age? A sacred enclosure? A place of prehistoric ritual and ceremony? Or is it more straight forward - an Iron Age hillfort or defensive homestead? Did the Brigantes build it to keep the Romans at bay, or was it the Romano British, trying to deal with the incoming Anglo Saxons? As well as Maiden Castle, we hike up onto the moor to look at the equally mysterious dykes that appear to control access to the dale. The Fremington and Grinton Dykes. Are they linked to the enigma that is Maiden Castle? Swaledale was once famous for lead mines. Perhaps the lead plays a part in this story. A hike up Gunnerside Gill to look at the impressive mines then ensues, before heading back to consider the evidence.
