19th January 2025 saw Great Western Railway deploy an 8-car Class 165 formation run from West Ealing depot to London Paddington to start a passenger service as 1R43 non-stop to Reading, before heading back into Reading Depot. The train was in a 3-2-3 set up, formed of 165116, 165128 and 165113, with this video being filmed in 165128. Being on the mainline, these units very quickly reach their top speed of 90mph, on todays occassion just before passing West Ealing station with the gear change happening at 5:38. We shut off power just after 08:25 when we hit 90, with power once again re-applied at 8:35. We later crossed onto the Down Relief line at Maidenhead, and once again reached 90mph, however this was not recorded. Rather unusually, this carriage had the engine isolated or set to idle in some form. It would not spool up with power applied, however started to work at reduced effort upon reaching approximately 47mph, which can be heard at 4:46. In the video you can just about hear the engines from the adjacent carriages doing all the work. I was debating if I should upload this, but I thought it was worth the clip of such a rare formation, and unusual circumstance of thrasing at full speed with barely any engine effort in my carriage. Enjoy the video
