Exploring The Ghost Town Of Thurmond, West Virginia. I recently visited this historic old town during a snowstorm which made the entire town look spectacular in the snow. In 1844, a man by the name of Captain W.D. Thurmond settled here and built this town up. It was officially incorporated in 1900. The C&O Railroad built an engine shop here and had a coaling tower built as they had many trains come through here on a consistent basis, especially coal and passenger trains. Steam locomotives would be serviced here. When the C&O switched from steam engines to diesel engines, the need for the locomotive shop dwindled and people began looking elsewhere for jobs. Slowly the town died as more and more people moved away. As of the 2020 census, there was a total of 5 residents. Let's take a walk through the little town and enjoy looking at some West Virginia history. Most buildings and homes are original and some date back as far as the 1800s.
