Six Japanese Gardens by Kaija Saariaho performed by Mitchell Carlstrom - Maps and Memories concert at Mingei International Museum on October 19, 2023 Ensemble: Mitchell Carlstrom, percussion About Mitchell Carlstrom: Mitchell Carlstrom is a percussionist dedicated to creating thought-provoking musical experiences. Through interpretation of compositions, he strives to challenge the meaning of sound in space, creating unique soundscapes for audiences to enjoy. Carlstrom’s performance experience ranges from solo repertoire to large ensembles, with his best musicianship found while working in chamber groups creating intimate music with friends. As a member of red fish blue fish, a founding member of the MinusOne Percussion Quartet, and a former member of Left Edge Percussion, he has toured throughout the United States and Mexico. Currently Mitchell is a DMA student at UCSD studying under Steven Schick, while having earned a Masters in Percussion Performance from Southern Oregon University under the direction of Terry Longshore, and a Bachelor of Music in Theory/Composition from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. About Maps & Memories Maps & Memories was inspired by Mingei International Museum’s Washi Transformed exhibit featuring highly textured two-dimensional works, expressive sculptures, and dramatic installations that explore the astonishing potential of Japanese handmade paper, known as washi. This concert featured the San Diego Children’s Choir in works by Ilse Weber, as well as “Six Japanese Gardens” for solo percussion by Kaija Saariaho, performed by percussionist Mitchell Carlstrom, and the Hausmann Quartet accompanied renowned composer and shakuachi player, Kojiro Umezaki for a performance of his work titled, “(Cycles) What falls must rise” written by Umezaki for shakuhachi, string quartet, and electronics.
