NORTH KESTEVEN PARISH #22: METHERINGHAM Metheringham – “Medrich’s Homestead” I hope you’re ready for a long one. This is Metheringham, one of the biggest villages in North Kesteven, and for that matter in Lincolnshire. Its situated on the springline, 9 miles South of Lincoln, and 10 North of Sleaford. Its situated on the Lincoln heath, but like its near neighbours like Dunston and Nocton it stretches Eastwards all the way to the River Witham. In doing so, it covers two small hamlets on Metheringham fen – Sots Hole and Tanvats. Known to the locals as “Meg”, the village is documented in the Domesday Book, and is thought to date from Saxon times. Metheringham has had a checkered history. Its darkest moment came in July 1599, when a great fire left only a few houses standing. It started in a gully that ran the length of the village street. It’s recovered well since then. Over 3,000 people live here – but that number is ever increasing. This village was the birthplace of Humphry Franics Ellis – the writer who developed the comic School master character A. J. Wentworth. in the magazine Punch and later in The New Yorker. Among its many landmarks is one of only five houses across Europe which house a particular religious group. There’s a windmill, a school, four pubs, two crosses, and even an outdoor swimming pool. So what are we waiting for?
