Located in the county of Leicestershire, and around 12 miles southwest of Leicester, is the town of Hinckley. Geographically, Hinckley is situated just off Watling Street - the Roman road running from the Kent coast to Wroxeter in Shropshire. This is the A5 in modern terms, and also serves as part of the border between Leicestershire and Warwickshire. After the Norman Conquest, a castle was built in Hinckley. This had fallen out of use by the 14th century, with nothing above ground remaining today. At the heart of the town is the Parish Church of St Mary. This dates back to the 14th century, with additions from the 15th and 16th centuries, an 18th century spire and some 19th century restoration. The first record of a market in Hinckley dates back to 1311. Historically, its main industry was hosiery. In 1640 the first stocking frame came to the town, leading to a thriving cottage industry. These were superseded by steam-powered mills in the Victorian era, providing employment to thousands before ultimately declining in the late 20th century. Also of note in terms of industry are the Hansom Cab, invented by Joseph Hansom and conceived in Hinckley in the 1830s, and Triumph Motorcycles, founded in 1983 and headquartered in Hinckley since 1988. In 1861 the railway arrived in Hinckley courtesy of the South Leicestershire Railway. The station of today is situated on the Birmingham–Peterborough Line. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
