Introduction a. If you’re experiencing numbness or tingling in your fingers from typing or using your mouse all day I’m going to explain why it could or couldn’t be carpal tunnel in this video, let’s check it out 2. What is Carpal Tunnel? a. Our Carpal Tunnel consists of the Median nerve and flexor tendons of the hand, and it’s all packed in a pretty tight space here under the center of our wrist b. When our wrist flexors get inflamed or overworked, the tunnel can narrow causing encroachment of our Median Nerve c. Our Median Nerve innervates our Thumb, Index Finger, Middle Finger, and half of our Ring finger d. If you’re experiencing numbness in this region, it could be carpal tunnel you’re dealing with 3. Problem 1 a. Our wrist can tend to be over extended while we’re typing our using our mouse, which can cause shortening of our flexor muscles of our hand and encroachment of the space in our carpal tunnel, causing the numbness and tingling we’re experiencing b. To address this, we want our wrist and hand to be neutral position as best as we can i. We can place a wrist rest under our wrist to support our wrist and hand into a more neutral posture while we’re typing ii. We can also use a vertical mouse instead, which place our wrist and hand into a more neutral posture, decreasing the chance of wrist extension encroaching on our Median nerve 4.
