In August 2017 I was a P3 flying a GEO 5. There was a solar Eclipse across the northern USA, and I talked my boss into letting me have 5 days of unexpected vacation so that I could drive up and see it. Of course I also brought my flying kit. Back then, I had to idea that there was good flying a mere 100 miles west of where I camped out to watch the eclipse. After it was over, I went to head south, and encountered the mother of all traffic jams from eclipse tourists heading home. So, I went the other way, toward Arco. I had driven about 50 miles when I passed a gas station an saw a truck with hang gliders on the rack. Stop and asked them if there was any good flying near by and they said "Follow us - King mountain!" Turns out that King Mountain Glider Park, owned by John Kangas, had also been in the path of totality. About 2 dozen pilots, hangies and baggies, had camped out and then we all went up. One of the best unexpected flights I had ever had! King is a long way from El Paso, and I had been putting off driving all the way there. But the local weather was crap, and I looked at the FC for Idaho, it seemed good, took a chance and drove there in two days - first night in Salt Lake. It paid off! Next time I need to be more confident, climb higher, ignore the washing-machine and go places!
