The Workers' Party MP for Aljunied GRC Sylvia Lim highlighted concerns over possible child trafficking linked to overseas adoptions after reports that Indonesian authorities were investigating an alleged baby trafficking ring supplying infants to Singapore. She noted that about 400 adoption applications are filed annually and said adoption should be encouraged both for its humanitarian value and its potential contribution to Singapore’s low fertility rate. Lim questioned how effective current safeguards are when children are adopted from abroad, despite measures under the Adoption of Children Act and new regulatory frameworks introduced in recent legislation. She also pointed out that ongoing investigations have delayed citizenship applications for some adopted children, urging authorities to consider granting citizen rights earlier when both adoptive parents are Singaporeans.
