Dumbarton, very much in the news recently as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are now the Earl and Countess of Dumbarton. However, that is a recent title...the former Earls of Lennox were the true former Dumbarton kings and queens...however, their castle was very quickly reserved to the crown in the early days of the old earldom. Dumbarton is rich in history, much of it lost, long lost. Yet no more ancient a place can you imagine. It's rock is truly the rock of ages. It has been possibly the most important fortress of our ancient pre-history, the seat of the original 'Britons' of old. In its shadows grew the old city of Alt Clut, sacked by the Vikings and many others, including an enraged James Stewart following the assassination of nearly all his male relatives by his namesake and kin, King James. His mother, the widowed Countess, gifted the town the once extensive and impressive Collegiate Church, of which but one sole arch remains. Close to this arch is the statue of Peter Denny, son of the Denny family who once owned extensive lands and who reputedly began life here as shipbuilders to King Robert Bruce as he experimented with naval vessel building at his home further up the River Leven. Sir Peter gazes out, to the derelict lands in front of the castle that once were his family's huge shipyard. The rock, with its ancient walls and remnants of garrisons, once one of the three main castles of Scotland, where Wallace was captured, stands as it always did, whilst round and about, the trains come and go, the people go about their daily lives and time, as always, marches on....
