Hundreds of anti-Assad demonstrators led by Salafi Sheikh Ahmad Al-Asir gathered in the square to express their anger against the military attacks by the Syrian army against opposition forces. As Lebanese army and riot police looked on, protesters chanted slogans and called on Assad to step down. "We want Bashar Assad to be tried as a war criminal," Al-Asir said. At the same time, pro-Assad protesters also gathered also at the square carrying posters of the Syrian president. Lebanese army troops and riot police used barbed wire to separate the two demonstrations. The UN says more than 7,500 people have been killed since the anti-Assad uprising started in March, 2011.
