how engine cooling system works | how motorcycle cooling system works | engine cooling system | Air Cooled vs Oil Cooled vs Liquid Cooled Engines | Which Cools Best? Why do motorcycles need a cooling system? What happens if your engine overheats? In this video, we explain why engine cooling is essential and break down the 3 main types of motorcycle engine cooling systems — Air-Cooled, Oil-Cooled, and Liquid-Cooled. Air cooled engine rely on airflow to remove heat. These engines have cooling fins on the cylinder block and cylinder head, which increase the surface area for heat dissipation. As the motorcycle moves, air flow over the fins and carries away the heat. Air cooled engines are simple, lightweight, cost-effective and easy to maintain, but they can be less efficient in hot climatic conditions or at high speed to maintain constant operating temperature. Oil Cooled Engine uses engine oil not just for lubrication but also as a heat transfer medium. As the engine runs, oil gets hotter that decrease its viscosity, losing its ability to protect engine parts. An external oil cooler (small radiator) helps cool down this hot oil using airflow. The cooled oil is then circulated back into the engine. Oil Cooled system provide better cooling efficiency than air cooled engines, and also enhanced lubrication, but Limited Cooling Capacity in extreme conditions or high-performance, and required regular oil changes. Liquid cooled engine use a special coolant (usually a mix of water and antifreeze) that circulates through water jackets around the cylinder and cylinder head. This coolant absorbs heat from the engine, then flows to a radiator—where the heat is released through metallic fins using airflow. If the airflow is insufficient (e.g., at idle or slow move), a cooling fan activates automatically. A thermostat valve ensures that coolant flow is regulated based on engine temperature. Liquid cooled engines provide Superior cooling, making them ideal for high-performance or extreme riding conditions like cars, motorcycles, and heavy-duty machines.
