I take great pride in delivering content that features the dwindling remnants of times past. This is one of those times. 50 years ago, Leslie Supertyfon air horns could be found everywhere. Now, most are in private collections or mounted on museum locomotives. Leslie horns on Class One equipment are becoming exceedingly rare. To my knowledge, there are only two other CN ES44s equipped with RS3Ls. Examples that sound good are even rarer, so you can understand why I thought I was losing it when I heard the 2291 from across town. I jumped in the car and managed to catch it heading north out of Carbondale. I followed it for a little while before turning back. Rumour has it that this particular RS3L is of Santa Fe heritage, from one of their C40-8Ws. CN bought around 70 secondhand units from BNSF around 2010. The G889 is an unscheduled long-haul freight, running only when needed. Its primary purpose is to move empty grain hoppers from the Zen-Noh Grain Corporation elevator in Helvetia, LA, to the Landus Co-Op elevator in Ida Grove, IA. Of note, the plant switchers at Landus appear to be EMD SW1200s. One is ex-BN 247, nee-CB&Q #9289. The other is ex-BN 228, nee-NP 169. If you like what you see, please consider subscribing :)
