Dizziness can arise for dozens of reasons. In this video, I go over a unique form of dizziness that can arise when our brain gets conflicting messages from different systems within our body. It's known as sensory conflict and it can make the brain unhappy, leading to annoying sensations such as nausea or dizziness. In particular, this video goes over what can happen when proprioception (the ability to feel and interpret movement within one's body) within the cervical spine is impaired or dysfunctional (it's more common than you might think). Additionally, I quickly touch on how neck pain (pain within the region of the cervical spine) can impair or diminish our proprioceptive abilities, which is common when dealing with injuries such as whiplash associated disorder that can result from car crashes, sports injuries, and much more. Our bodies are these amazing things that often have redundant systems in place otherwise ensure our well-being. Sometimes, these systems can become out of sync with one another, such as the case demonstrated in this video where the vestibular system and the proprioceptors within the neck disagree with one another. It can be a tricky situation to navigate, but it all starts by determining if a mismatch between these two systems is taking place, which can be done through a special test known as the joint position error test, or JPE for short. So, follow along in this video as I give a practical demonstration of proprioception along with how to determine if there is a mismatch between the proprioceptors in the cervical spine and vestibular system within the inner ear!
