Many of us like to image dark nebulae, and even if one doesn’t specifically target them, they are often present in our images of bright nebulae. They make our images more dramatic and captivating, as Rod Pommier showed in his March 2023 talk (https://www.youtube.com/live/Cvx3YtSH...) on dark nebulae. For example, the North America Nebula wouldn’t resemble that continent so strongly if it didn’t have LDN 935 posing as the Gulf of Mexico. However, LDNs (Lynds Dark Nebulae) are frequently misidentified or unidentified in astro images. Rod has seen many published images in which the identification of the LDN is clearly incorrect, and he'll show examples of how PixInsight, The Aladin Sky Atlas, and Stellarium all misidentify or fail to identify the LDNs contained in images. This isn’t anyone’s fault, as resources to identify LDNs in astro images are currently woefully inadequate. To make matters worse, there is often disagreement between those programs about the identify of a particular LDN. These problems are inexplicable; precession and other factors simply don’t explain these errors. Of course, this needs a solution, and Rod has a surprising way to solve this vexing problem. His plan is to make this solution available to all astro imagers, both amateur and professional, in the near future (once he finishes this project). Rod is a surgical oncologist and Professor of Surgery, and has been doing astrophotography for 36 years. He's published a number of articles in Sky & Telescope and Astronomy Magazine, illustrated with his own astrophotos.
