What is the biggest preflop mistake that new poker players make? It is very common in small stakes poker to see people limping into the pot without realizing that they are making one of the top preflop mistakes you can make in poker! In this video, pokercoaching coach & founder Jonathan Little breaks down why limping (flat calling the BB preflop) is the biggest preflop mistake that a new poker player can make and teaches what adjustments you need to make to your poker strategy so that you can become a winning poker player both before & after the flop! Limping is very common in small stakes poker. However, any studied player can very easily exploit this preflop mistake which makes it hard for you to win at poker when you limp. Why Limping Is The Biggest Preflop Mistake #1: Limping Telegraphs Weakness The biggest issue with limping is that it is typically an unbalanced play. If you would raise with your best hands (pocket aces, pocket kings, ace king etc.) and limp with everything else, then your opponent's will KNOW that you do not have a very strong hand when you limp. This is a problem because they can exploit this by playing aggressively against your limps and folding to your raises, meaning you have to fold a lot of the time when you limp, and never get to play a big pot with your best hands. Why Limping Is The Biggest Preflop Mistake #2: Limping Removes Initiative When you limp in preflop, you are taking a passive line, which means you rarely get to develop aggression postflop (after the first 3 cards are dealt). This is a problem because when you do make a strong hand, you want to have the ability to play a big pot. But if you have taken a passive line preflop, and then bet into a small pot, alarm bells will start to go off in your opponent's head! In order to control the pot, you need to take aggressive lines preflop. Why Limping Is The Biggest Preflop Mistake #3: Limping Leads To Multiway Pots Often times when a player limps, several other players will limp in after them. This is an issue because the more players there are in a hand, the higher the likelyhood that one of those players connects with the board! Most players also know to avoid playing big pots multiway with marginal hands, which means you will struggle to get paid when you happen to be the person that connects with the board the most!
