In this video, I break down the 5 most common mistakes players are making in small stakes poker. Small Stakes Poker is EASY to beat! So many low/small stakes players (in both cash games & tournaments) have very little discipline and are making frequent & compounding mistakes that you can take advantage of if you pay attention to them. I get told all the time that "GTO does not work in my cardroom" or that "you always get unlucky vs the worst players you know"... I hate to break it to you, you're not thinking about poker in the right way! GTO is a baseline strategy that you need to understand in order to make informed decisions. Once you understand the strategy, it is down to you to appropriately DEVIATE from the baseline so that you can make the maximum amount possible. If your opponent never bluffs, don't make the "GTO hero call"! With that out of the way, here are the 5 most common mistakes I see players making in small stakes poker, as well as how YOU can take advantage of these mistakes to maximize your win rate. Small Stakes Mistake 1 - Playing Too Many Hands Preflop Often the most profitable strategy is a 'Tight Aggressive' strategy. This means playing fewer hands, and battling for pots when it makes sense. The easiest way to avoid playing too many hands, is to reduce the number of hands you call with, and 3-betting a decent selection of hands when you do want to play. You should also fold more often when you will be out of position, especially against tighter ranges. Small Stakes Mistake 2 - Misplaying Marginal Hands I have entire videos showing you the mistakes to avoid with marginal/medium strength hands. To summarize, stop overplaying marginal hands & stacking off lightly! If you have top pair with no kicker, and somebody is trying to load their money into the pot, you are very unlikely to be good! This is especially true at the smaller stakes where players do not bluff enough. Small Stakes Mistake 3 - Not Thinking In Terms Of Ranges Most losing players only care about their own 2 cards. They are trying to put people on exact hands and make all of their decisions based on what they think those 2 exact cards are. STOP PUTTING PEOPLE ON EXACT HANDS! You have to start putting them on a 'range' of hands, and adjusting your strategy depending on how that range of hands interacts with the board. Having a broader approach to the hands your opponents are likely to play will make you decisions much more informed than if you are only thinking about your own cards. Small Stakes Mistake 4 - Never Bluffing Bluffing is a huge part of poker, too many small stakes players rarely ever bluff, which will have a massive impact on their winrate. If you never bluff, you will have a very hard time getting paid when you make a strong hand, leaving you to rely on being on the right side of a cooler when a lot of money goes into the pot. Small Stakes Mistake 5 - Hero Calling On The River Most players DO NOT BLUFF ENOUGH at the low stakes. You WIN by folding against tight ranges & players and living to see another hand. The major issue you need to deal with if you find yourself frequently hero calling for massive pots on the river, is that you need to get rid of your ego, realize that you're going to get bluffed occasionally and that's OK!
