The Most Dangerous Brachial Plexus Injuries In this video, birth injury lawyer Adam Funk explains how brachial plexus nerve injuries can occur during labor and delivery, particularly when complications such as shoulder dystocia arise. The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that runs from the neck into the shoulder, arm, and hand. These nerves control movement and sensation in the upper extremity. When these nerves are stretched, compressed, or torn during childbirth, a baby can develop weakness or paralysis in the arm. One of the most common situations where this occurs is shoulder dystocia, a delivery emergency in which the baby’s head is delivered but the shoulder becomes stuck behind the mother’s pubic bone. When this happens, doctors must use specific maneuvers to safely free the shoulder. If excessive traction or pulling is applied to the baby’s head or neck during this process, the brachial plexus nerves may become injured. Brachial plexus injuries can include conditions such as Erb’s palsy, which affects the shoulder and upper arm, or other nerve injuries that cause weakness or loss of movement in the arm or hand. Some babies recover over time with therapy, but more severe injuries can lead to permanent arm weakness or disability. If your child developed an arm or shoulder injury after being stuck in the birth canal during delivery, it may be important to understand what happened during labor and delivery.
