Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s recent visit to Darul Uloom Deoband in Uttar Pradesh marked a turning point in South Asian diplomacy and symbolism. This was the first visit by a top Taliban leader to India since the group’s return to power in 2021 — and the choice of Deoband spoke volumes. Deoband, one of the world’s most influential Islamic seminaries, has deep historical ties with Afghanistan.
