"It is only inevitable that people from different countries and regions may not see eye to eye with one another on some different issues and I think in this context we should enter into consultations on an equal footing to narrow our differences and expand our common ground on the basis on mutual respect," Hu told reporters in the Chinese capital on Friday. Hu spoke to about 30 international reporters at the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing in a rare news conference as China tries to use the Olympics as a platform to raise its profile on the world stage. "China's door of opening up to the outside is always wide open no matter during the Olympic Games or after the Olympic Games, we will as always welcome foreign reporters and journalists to come to this country to cover what is happening here," Hu said. Reporters, who were asked to submit their questions before the news conference, had to raise their hand and wait to be chosen by a Chinese foreign ministry official before putting their question to the president. Not all reporters were chosen to ask questions. Georg Blume from German newspaper Die Zeit was not selected to ask a question and as the session was ending he tried to get his question about human rights in before Hu left. AP Television footage shows Hu pausing momentarily as Blume shouts out his question, before leaving without answering.
